Zang’s Cardiopad: From African to African-American History

Published on February 10, 2012

Right on time for African-American history this month, African engineer Arthur Zang makes history with one of the most innovation creations of our generation.  The 24-year-old Cameroonian invented what he calls, the Cardiopad.  In our world of touch screens and instant gratification, the Cardiopad is a medical tablet that allows the user to monitor their heart through several different performances at an instant.  Amongst them is the ECG, or the electrocardiogram, which can be performed in rural locations around the world.

Described in his thesis statement as a “design and implementation of a system for acquiring, processing and transmission via the GSM network signal heart.”  Forbes expounds ”the device spares African patients living in remote areas the trouble of having to travel to urban centers to seek medical examinations.”  It’s the first tablet of its kind in all of Africa.

To put this device into perspective, it easily serves the responsibility of projecting the possibility of life or death for millions of people who previously had very difficult and demanding utilities to determine such a feat.  It also drastically cuts down the need for these heart patients to have to travel far and long distances for these critical tests.  It gets me to wondering if it could have served as a better alternative for Dr. Murray.  Maybe he would’ve found it more interesting to continue monitoring Michael Jackson if it was this simplified then… but I’m a dreamer.

It offers doctors the ability to diagnose and monitor several different aspects of the heart with little effort.  For Cameroon alone, it serves as a great assistant to the vacant heart surgeons, bidding claim to only 30 in the country– most of which are present in the same 2 or 3 locations– for over 20 million inhabitants.

This device has already proven its effectiveness for many in Cameroon, especially those who are financially unstable.  You can read the full details on the invention here.  Currently, he’s searching for investors to take the mass-production globally.  We wish him the best!

Zang is still a young man and is proving what a little imagination and dedication can do.  Is there anything you’ve thought of that has yet to be invented?  Or was invented several years after you initially thought of it?  I know I have!  Share with us below and go out on a limb.  You never know where your heart could take you.
