Rumored to drop a third album this summer, recording artist Solange Knowles is killing the underground. Since her debut album, Solo Star, in 2003; the 24 year old has come a long way artistically. In the tradition of many super-star siblings, Knowles has constantly faced comparisons to her multi-platinum selling older sister, Beyonce. After garnering minimal acclaim from her first album, she remained behind the scenes dancing and singing background for Destiny’s Child, as well as taking a turn at film acting. In 2006, Solange flexed her writing skills by penning hit tunes for her sister such as “Get Me Bodied” and “Upgrade U” which won her an ASCAP Award.
By 2008, Knowles was ready to embark upon her second album release, Sol-Angel and the Hadley St. Dreams. The album peaked at #3 on the U.S. Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Album Chart and #9 on the Billboard 200. Selling close to 140,000 copies, many considered the album a breakthrough.
Fast-forward to the present, her voice has grown confident and defiant in its delivery. Weaving blues, jazz, techno, and r&b into her new sound of music; she’s become the hidden treasure of a growing underground independent music movement.
Did we mention she can DJ a party like none-other?
Carving out her own niche, it’s clear Solange is not just someone’s little sister
