Airwaves, hallways, magazines, blogs, and newspapers alike, continuously discuss the re-emergence of Lauryn Hill. Many have wondered where she’s been, what she’s been doing, why she left, and why she’s deciding to come back now. In her recent interview with NPR, Ms. Hill set everything straight and put everything out on the line to dry. Upon her return to the spotlight, there’s something new brewing within her that might this ‘return’ actually happen. ”There used to be a singing voice and there used to be a rapping voice but now the singing voice has to become more like my speaking voice in order for the two to be able to coexist,” said Hill.
In the process of recreating herself, she’s also recreating her sound–opening up new gateways to experience music, and fulfilling the hopes of stans all over the world with a new age in music. On her long hiatus, Hill responded: “There were a number of different reasons, but partly, the support system that I needed was not necessarily in place. There were things about myself, personal-growth things, that I had to go through in order to feel like it was worth it. Oftentimes, I think people are forced to make decisions prematurely. And then that sound radiates.”
The Jersey-native has also been busy with her five children and has just recently felt that her youngest is old enough to experience time away from his mother without any psychological or social damage. Have musical prayers been answered? Does this mean we will get that Fugees reunion album? In due time, we shall see.
